Jade

A raw Australian jade ring, built on rough chrysoprase, the apple-green chalcedony sold under that trade name (it is not nephrite or jadeite, and we say so). The stone is kept rough and irregular, so texture and outline are unique to that ring. A small selection by design; the material we like at this quality does not come in often.

What to expect from your Jade

Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.

Is Australian jade real jade?

It is chrysoprase, a green chalcedony sold under the trade name Australian jade. It is not nephrite or jadeite, and we say so plainly. It is a genuine natural stone with an even apple-green color.

Is there a smoother chrysoprase option?

Yes. An oval rosecut chrysoprase ring, polished into a low dome, sits in the May birthstone collection. It is flatter and easier to wear beside other rings.

A closer look at Jade

Australian jade is the trade name for chrysoprase, a green chalcedony colored by nickel; it is not nephrite or jadeite. It is opaque rather than transparent, with a waxy surface and a clean apple-green tone that stays even across the stone instead of banding the way a lot of green material does. The raw stone keeps its natural face, so texture and outline are unique to that ring and it reads a little chunkier on the hand than a polished dome would. Green chalcedony is a stone people often reach for as a calmer alternative to emerald. Both settings are 24k gold over electroformed copper.

What does jade mean?

The stone on this page is chrysoprase, which borrows the trade name Australian jade, so its lore comes from two places. True jade, nephrite and jadeite, has meant luck, harmony and long life in Chinese tradition for thousands of years and is still given to children and newlyweds for protection; chrysoprase has its own, smaller history as Frederick the Great's favorite stone. In modern crystal practice chrysoprase is a heart-chakra stone of joy, optimism and easy confidence, worked with for heartbreak and self-acceptance. Taurus, Libra and Cancer are its signs.

How do people work with jade?

Chinese custom says jade should be worn often so it takes on the warmth of the wearer, and given rather than bought; practitioners apply the same habit to chrysoprase and wear it on the left hand, the receiving hand, for luck that comes in. It is charged by resting it beside a plant overnight. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.

How has jade been used through history?

Chrysoprase, the stone on this page, was Frederick the Great's favorite and decorates his palace at Sanssouci; the Marlborough deposits in Queensland, discovered around 1905 and mined commercially from the 1960s, became the world's best source. The trade name borrows from true jade, nephrite and jadeite, which Chinese carvers have worked for eight thousand years, and it is worth knowing the difference.

Where does jade come from?

Queensland's Marlborough Creek is the classic source; Tanzania, Brazil and Indonesia also produce it. Chrysoprase rough at this quality is scarce, and ours comes from vintage parcels and the irregular pieces a cutter would not shape, which is why the collection is small and the ring is one of a kind.

Is raw jade good for everyday wear?

Chalcedony is tough and suits daily wear. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth and store it out of long direct sun, which can slowly fade the green.
