Why is raw sapphire gray-blue instead of bright blue?
Because it has never been cut. A faceted sapphire concentrates color through polished windows; rough sapphire keeps a satin surface that reads inky indigo in some stones and nearly slate in others, deeper in shade and brighter in direct sun.
Is sapphire a good everyday ring stone?
One of the best. Corundum is second only to diamond in hardness. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth, and store it away from softer stones it could scratch.
Are ruby and sapphire the same mineral?
Yes. Both are corundum. Chromium turns it red and the trade calls that ruby; every other color is sapphire, with blue the classic.
A closer look at Sapphire
Sapphire is corundum, hard enough for daily wear, and in rough form it arrives as a blocky crystal with a satin surface rather than a faceted blue gem. That matte face is why the color reads deeper in shade and brighter in direct sun. Every stone is hand-picked and set in 24k gold over electroformed copper or in sterling silver in our Atlanta studio, so no two of these pieces come out identical. Ring sizes across the collection run 5 to 11. Band choices are 14k gold-filled (1/20) with a 24k dip, rose gold-filled or sterling silver, except the drop and dangle pair, which comes in yellow gold or silver only. The mini ring and the small silver studs wear most easily day to day. Sapphire is the September birthstone and the traditional forty-fifth anniversary stone.
What does sapphire mean?
Sapphire has been the stone of wisdom and divine favor since the ancient Persians, who believed the sky was blue because the earth rested on a giant sapphire. Medieval clergy wore it to symbolize heaven; Buddhist tradition associates it with devotion; Vedic astrology treats blue sapphire as the stone of Saturn, discipline and focus. Modern practitioners work with sapphire for mental clarity, concentration and calm under pressure, and for protection against envy, placing it with the third eye and throat chakras. Virgo, Libra and Taurus are its signs.
How do people work with sapphire?
Sapphire is charged in moonlight. Practitioners hold it at the third eye during meditation for focus, and Vedic tradition wears blue sapphire on the middle finger of the working hand. It is the stone to wear into an exam or a negotiation. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has sapphire been used through history?
Medieval clergy wore it to symbolize heaven, and Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring, now worn by the Princess of Wales, made it the most famous colored-stone ring in the world. Kashmir sapphires mined in the 1880s still set the standard for the velvety blue the trade chases.
Where does sapphire come from?
Sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby, colored blue by traces of iron and titanium. Sri Lanka has produced it for two thousand years; Madagascar, Australia, Thailand and Montana are the other sources people usually mean. Our sapphire rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw sapphire good for everyday wear?
