Are aquamarine and emerald related?
They are the same mineral, beryl. Iron makes aquamarine blue; chromium and vanadium make emerald green. Both are set rough here so the natural crystal shape stays visible.

Aquamarine is the pale blue variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald, and it is the March birthstone. Rough aquamarine keeps the natural growth lines and frosted surface that faceting removes, which is why the color here reads soft rather than glassy. Rings are the heart of this collection and the structure is easy to read: single-stone and dainty bands first, then triple, five-stone, baguette and bar rings. Sizes run 5 to 12, with most bands offered in yellow gold, rose gold or sterling silver and a few in gold only. For ears there are bar studs, oval studs, drop and dangle pairs, and the cascading statement earrings. Necklaces run from a snake-chain choker to the large crystal pendant, with cable chain in 16, 18 or 20 inches and paperclip, snake or beaded chain at 18 inches.

Aquamarine has been a stone of calm water and calm words for a very long time. Sailors' lore called it the treasure of mermaids and a charm for safe passage; medieval lapidaries prescribed it to quiet the mind and settle quarrels. Modern practitioners describe it as a throat-chakra stone, worked with for nerves before speaking up and for saying a hard thing kindly, and the traditional way to wear it is as a pendant at the collarbone. In crystal lore it is a stone of the quiet kind of courage. Pisces and Aries are its signs.
How do people work with aquamarine?
Aquamarine is the water stone, so the old way to cleanse it was a bowl of spring water; for a set piece, moonlight does the same job without touching the metal. Practitioners wear it at the throat before a hard conversation or a speech, and some keep one in the car as the modern form of the sailor's charm. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has aquamarine been used through history?
The name is Latin for seawater, and sailors' lore called the stone the treasure of mermaids. Medieval lapidaries recommended it to soothe the mind and settle quarrels. The Dom Pedro, the largest cut aquamarine in the world, was carved from a Brazilian crystal in the early 1990s and is now at the Smithsonian.
Where does aquamarine come from?
Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl, colored by iron, from the same family as emerald. Brazil is the historic source; Pakistan, Nigeria, Madagascar and Mozambique supply much of the rest. Our aquamarine rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw aquamarine good for everyday wear?
Beryl is hard and well suited to daily wear. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth and avoid hard knocks on the crystal edges.
