Diamond

Raw diamond rings, studs and necklaces in two forms of April's stone. Rough diamond, white, black and blue, is a small geometric crystal with a frosted surface and a quiet gray sparkle, nothing like the cut version most people picture. Herkimer diamond is a naturally double-pointed quartz, water clear and much brighter, left rough and set point out.

What to expect from your Diamond

Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.

Are your raw diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. The white, black and blue rough diamonds are natural diamond crystals that have never been cut, so they keep a frosted surface and a soft gray sparkle rather than the flash of a faceted stone. Herkimer diamond pieces are quartz and are labeled as such.

Why does a raw diamond look cloudy or gray?

Because it is uncut. Faceting is what gives a diamond its fire; a rough crystal shows its natural skin, often frosted, smoky or steel gray. That quieter look is the point of wearing it raw.

What is a Herkimer diamond?

A double-terminated quartz crystal from Herkimer County, New York, that grows with facets already formed. It is clear and bright like a cut diamond, far more affordable, and a different mineral; we label every Herkimer piece as Herkimer.

A closer look at Diamond

Rough diamond never meets a cutting wheel, so the crystal keeps its own geometry and often a smoky or steel gray cast. Herkimer quartz is a different mineral entirely, brighter and more transparent, which is why people reach for it when they want an engagement ring that is not trying to look conventional. Stones are chosen one at a time in the studio, so a five stone ring is five separate decisions about how the points sit together, and the piece that arrives will differ a little from the photo. For something quiet, the dainty solitaires and the small studs do it. For weight, look at the multi stone rings. Rings are made in sizes 5 through 11 depending on the style.

What does diamond mean?

Diamond has stood for invincibility, purity and love that does not end for as long as people have found it. Ancient Hindu texts describe diamonds as protection from evil; Romans wore them as talismans in battle; the name comes from the Greek adamas, unconquerable. In modern crystal practice diamond is the amplifier, a stone said to strengthen whatever intention or stone sits beside it, and a stone of clarity and courage. It is placed with the crown chakra. A raw diamond carries the same reputation in a quieter form. Aries, Leo and Libra are its signs.

How do people work with diamond?

Diamond is said to need no charging, only cleaning. Practitioners pair a raw diamond with another stone to amplify its work and wear it when a commitment needs keeping. The Roman belief in a vein running from the fourth finger of the left hand straight to the heart is why engagement rings still go there. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.

How has diamond been used through history?

Diamonds were first gathered from Indian riverbeds more than two thousand years ago and reached Europe through Venice. For most of that history they were worn rough, since nobody could cut them until the late Middle Ages, and the brilliant cut only arrived in the late 1600s. Raw diamond jewelry today returns to that older idea, the crystal as it formed, octahedral or cubic, with a frosted skin and a quiet gray sparkle.

Where does diamond come from?

Diamond is crystallized carbon formed under immense heat and pressure far below the surface and carried up in volcanic pipes. Botswana, Russia, Canada, South Africa and Australia are the major producers. Herkimer diamond, sold alongside, is a different mineral entirely: a naturally double-pointed quartz from upstate New York, water clear and much brighter. Our diamond rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.

Is raw diamond good for everyday wear?

Diamond is the hardest stone there is, but it can chip along a cleavage plane if struck sharply, and it attracts grease. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth and store it apart from everything else, which it will scratch.
