Will my moonstone have a blue flash?
Rainbow moonstone shows a blue sheen that moves as you turn the stone. Every stone is hand-picked, so the strength and position of the flash vary piece to piece, and the rose cut cabochons hold it more steadily than a raw face.
Is moonstone durable enough for everyday wear?
With care. Moonstone is softer than quartz, so take rings off for heavy work, keep it dry, and clean it with a soft cloth. Studs and pendants see less wear and need less thought.
What is the difference between moonstone and rainbow moonstone?
Classic moonstone is orthoclase feldspar with a white to silver sheen. Rainbow moonstone is a white labradorite whose sheen runs blue. All of ours are rainbow moonstone, set rough or rose cut.
A closer look at Moonstone
Rainbow moonstone is technically a white labradorite, and its blue sheen, which looks like moonstone's adularescence, floats just under the surface and moves as you turn the stone. A raw face keeps a frosted, milky look with the blue coming and going, while the rose cut cabochons are flat enough to hold the sheen more steadily. Shape is the real decision here. The rain drop and triangle pieces give a defined silhouette that reads from across a room, while the moon shapes lean celestial and sit well with stars and crescents you already wear. Rings are made in sizes 5 through 10, and about half the collection offers a metal choice of yellow gold fill, rose gold fill or sterling silver, so the cool blue can be warmed or kept crisp. What does moonstone mean?
Moonstone has been tied to the moon, to intuition and to new beginnings for as long as people have named it. Romans believed it was solidified moonlight; Hindu tradition held it sacred and said it brought good dreams; travelers carried it as protection on night journeys. In modern crystal practice moonstone is the stone of intuition and emotional balance, worked with to ride the swings of a hard season rather than fight them, and it is kept under the pillow by people who want calmer dreams. It belongs to the crown and third eye chakras. Cancer, Libra and Scorpio are its signs.
How do people work with moonstone?
Moonstone belongs to the full moon. Modern witches and crystal practitioners set it on a windowsill overnight on the full moon to charge it, cleanse it in moonlight rather than salt, and keep it under the pillow for calmer dreams. It is also worn through a new beginning, a move, a new job, a first week, as the stone for the next chapter. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has moonstone been used through history?
The Romans believed moonstone was made of solidified moonlight, and Hindu tradition held the same. It was the signature stone of Art Nouveau, set by René Lalique and his contemporaries, and Florida made it the state gem in 1970 to honor the moon landings, even though none is mined there.
Where does moonstone come from?
The flash comes from light scattering between thin internal layers. Sri Lanka and India are the main sources, with Madagascar and Myanmar contributing. Our moonstone rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw moonstone good for everyday wear?
Moonstone is softer than quartz and can cleave on a hard knock, so take rings off for heavy work, keep it dry and clean it with a soft cloth.
