Labradorescence is the technical name for the flash, and it comes from light bouncing off internal layers inside the feldspar. Where does labradorite come from?
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, and the flash, called labradorescence, comes from light scattering between thin twinned layers inside the crystal. Canada's Labrador coast, Madagascar and Finland are the main sources; Finnish material with flash across the whole stone is sold as spectrolite. Our labradorite rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw labradorite good for everyday wear?
Labradorite is moderately hard but can cleave on a sharp knock. Keep it dry, take rings off for heavy work, and wipe with a soft cloth rather than soaking.
