A closer look at Amethyst
Amethyst is purple quartz, and the rough crystals we set rarely hold one flat tone. Most shade from near-clear at the base into deep grape at the tip, often with visible banding inside, so the piece you receive will not match the photo crystal for crystal. That is what hand-picking rough stone means. Choosing here is mostly about scale. The mini studs and the dainty pear ring disappear into everyday wear, while the triple cluster ring, the layered necklace set and the edgy fleur cluster drops are meant to be the one thing you are wearing. Ring sizes run 5 to 11, most bands can be had in yellow gold, rose gold or sterling silver, though a few of the cluster and cut styles are made in one metal only, and pendants can be hung on a cable chain in 16, 18 or 20 inches, or on an 18 inch paperclip, snake or beaded chain. What does amethyst mean?
Amethyst is the stone most people start with. Medieval healers wore it against nightmares, and it has been the clear-head stone since the Greeks named it. Modern practitioners describe it as the stone for a quieter mind, many keep one on the nightstand, and amethyst malas are common in meditation practice. In chakra work it belongs to the crown and third eye, and in crystal lore it is a protective stone, the one for steadying a mind that spirals. Pisces and Aquarius are its traditional signs.
How do people work with amethyst?
The ritual most people know is the simplest one. Modern witches and crystal practitioners set amethyst on a windowsill on the night of a full moon to charge it, keep it out of the sun, which fades the purple, and hold it during meditation or set it on the nightstand before sleep. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has amethyst been used through history?
The name comes from the Greek amethystos, 'not drunken', because the ancients believed the purple stone guarded against intoxication and are said to have drunk from amethyst cups. Medieval clergy wore it as a symbol of sobriety and spiritual clarity, and until the big Brazilian deposits of the 1800s amethyst was priced alongside ruby and emerald.
Where does amethyst come from?
Amethyst is quartz colored purple by trace iron and natural irradiation inside the crystal. The big commercial sources are Brazil and Uruguay, where it grows in geodes the size of a person, with Zambia producing a darker, more saturated material. Rough points like ours shade from near-clear at the base to deep grape at the tip, a gradient that faceting removes. Faceters want clean, even amethyst; we want the opposite. The pieces here are picked from the crystals a cutter passes over, the banded, the frosted and the oddly pointed, plus vintage parcels from old collections, so nothing is mined to order for us.
Is raw amethyst good for everyday wear?
Quartz is hard enough for everyday rings and studs. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth, and store it out of direct sun for long stretches, which can slowly fade the purple.
