Does raw peridot come in different shades?
Olive to lime, and nothing else. Peridot is one of the few gems that only comes in one color; what varies is depth, and that comes down to the individual hand-picked crystal.
Is peridot hard enough for a daily ring?
It is moderately hard and does well with everyday wear. Keep it dry, avoid harsh cleaners, and take it off for heavy work.
Which metal suits peridot best?
Yellow gold plays up the yellow-green and is how most of the collection is shown. Sterling silver keeps it crisp and cool; rose gold sits between the two.
A closer look at Peridot
Peridot is the August birthstone and one of the very few gems that only comes in one color. The olive to lime green comes from iron in the crystal structure itself rather than a trace impurity, though the depth varies from stone to stone. Rough peridot is glassy and bright, which keeps even a small stone visible on the hand. Most of the collection is shown in yellow gold, which suits the yellow-green, though the two plain rings, both stud styles and the Leo pendant also come in sterling silver, and several add rose gold fill. Ring sizes are made 5 through 11. With a group this small the choice is mostly scale: the dainty studs disappear into everyday wear, the five stone and statement rings do not.
What does peridot mean?
Peridot was the gem of the sun to the Egyptians, who believed it kept away the terrors of the night and set it in gold so the stone could do its work. In Hawaii, olivine sand and crystals are linked to the volcano goddess Pele. Modern practitioners describe peridot as a stone of renewal, for letting go of jealousy, resentment and old grudges, and for confidence that stays kind; think of it as compassion with a spine. It is placed with the heart and solar plexus chakras. Leo and Virgo are its signs.
How do people work with peridot?
Peridot is charged in early morning sun, when the light is gold rather than white. It is worn over the heart or on the giving hand, and held in meditation on letting go of a grudge; some practitioners pair it with rose quartz for that work. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has peridot been used through history?
The Egyptians mined peridot on the Red Sea island of Zabargad and called it the gem of the sun; some historians think Cleopatra's famous emeralds were actually peridot. Crusaders brought it back to Europe, where it was set into church treasuries, and the Cologne Cathedral shrine holds peridots once thought to be emeralds.
Where does peridot come from?
It forms deep in the earth and arrives at the surface in volcanic rock, and small amounts have even been found in meteorites. Arizona's San Carlos reservation, Pakistan, Myanmar and China are the main sources today. Our peridot rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw peridot good for everyday wear?
Peridot is moderately hard and suits everyday wear with a little care. Keep it dry, avoid sudden temperature changes and harsh cleaners, and wipe with a soft cloth.
