What is the August birthstone?
Peridot, an olive to lime green stone that is green all the way through. Everything here is peridot, in raw rings, studs, drop earrings and a seed pod pendant.
Does peridot come in different greens?
Only within a narrow band, olive to lime. It is one of the few gems that occurs in a single color, so the variation you see is the individual hand-picked crystal, not a grade.

Its color sits between olive and lime, and it holds that yellow-green in lamplight where many green stones go gray. Spinel and sardonyx are August's other official stones, but we do not make them, so the August pieces here are peridot.
How to choose August birthstone jewelry
Cut peridot is faceted into even, mirrored planes. Raw peridot keeps the shape it grew in, so you get uneven facets, natural inclusions and a surface that scatters light instead of flashing it back. Ours are set in 24k gold over electroformed copper, on 14k gold-filled (1/20) chain with a 24k dip.
Choosing is mostly about scale. Studs and the dainty ring read quiet and everyday. The statement ring and drop earrings put the stone forward. If you want green you notice from across a room, size up.

August has three official stones, peridot, spinel and sardonyx, and peridot is the only one we make. It is one of the few gems that comes in only one color. The Egyptians called it the gem of the sun and mined it on an island in the Red Sea; some of the 'emeralds' in European cathedrals turned out to be peridot. It is the stone of renewal and good cheer. Our natural stones are sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside and from vintage lots, so the rough in your piece was already out of the ground before we found it.
