What to expect from your Tourmaline
Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.
Which tourmaline colors do you carry?
Black, pink, green, dark blue, watermelon and rainbow. Pink and watermelon read across a room; the black baguette band disappears into a stack. Every stone is natural rough or sliced crystal, hand-picked.
What is watermelon tourmaline?
A single crystal that grew with a pink center and a green outer layer. Sliced across, it shows both at once. Because each slice is unique, the proportion of pink to green varies from piece to piece.
Is tourmaline an October birthstone?
Yes. October has two, opal and tourmaline. Tourmaline is the harder and more geometric of the pair, and the pink and black pieces are the usual birthday picks.
A closer look at Tourmaline
One mineral family happens to crystallize in nearly every color, and a single crystal can change color along its length. That is where watermelon tourmaline comes from, a pink core wrapped in a green rind that only shows when the crystal is sliced across. Black tourmaline, or schorl, forms in dense opaque rods that take a good natural facet. The bar and baguette rings use that long crystal shape directly, set lengthwise along the finger in sizes 5 through 10, while the fleur and art deco rings frame a smaller stone in a shaped setting, 24k gold over electroformed copper in the gold options and sterling in the silver. The necklaces let you pick the chain: cable, paperclip, snake, beaded station or a 16 inch leather choker. For a stone that reads across a room choose pink or watermelon, and for something that disappears into a stack choose the black baguette band.
What does tourmaline mean?
Tourmaline is a family, and its meanings follow its colors. Black tourmaline is the protection stone of modern crystal practice, kept by the door or in a pocket and said to absorb negative energy, and it is placed with the root chakra for grounding. Pink tourmaline is the heart stone, worked with for self-love, gentleness and recovery after loss. Watermelon tourmaline, pink inside green, is said to hold both at once. Older tradition agrees on the outline: Dutch traders called it the aschentrekker, the ash-puller, because a warmed crystal pulls ash from a pipe, a real electrical property that early lore read as power. Libra, Virgo and Capricorn are its signs.
How do people work with tourmaline?
Black tourmaline goes by the door, in a pocket or under the desk. Pink tourmaline is charged in gentle morning light and worn over the heart. Watermelon tourmaline is held in meditation when two feelings need to sit together. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has tourmaline been used through history?
Dutch traders brought tourmaline from Sri Lanka in the 1700s under the Sinhalese name turmali, 'mixed stones', because nobody could agree on what they were. Spanish conquistadors mistook green tourmaline for emerald, the Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi collected the pink, and a Maine deposit found in 1820 by two young naturalists became the first gem tourmaline mine in the United States.
Where does tourmaline come from?
Brazil is the largest source, with Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar and the United States contributing. Our tourmaline rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw tourmaline good for everyday wear?
Tourmaline is reasonably hard and fine for daily wear. Keep it dry, avoid sudden heat and ultrasonic cleaners, and wipe with a soft cloth.
