What to expect from your Citrine
Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.
Is your citrine heat-treated?
Much of the world's citrine starts as amethyst and is heated to turn it yellow, and we do not have paperwork on every lot. What we can promise is that the crystals are rough and uncut; nothing is polished or shaped after it reaches us.
What color should I expect from a raw citrine piece?
Anything from pale honey to smoky amber. Each stone is hand-picked, so two pieces of the same style will carry slightly different warmth.
Is citrine a November birthstone?
Yes. November has two birthstones, citrine and topaz. Citrine is the warmer and more affordable of the two and the one most of our November pieces use.
A closer look at Citrine
Citrine is quartz tinted yellow by trace iron, hard enough to live on a hand day after day. Kept rough, the crystal stays a little frosted and the warm tone spreads through the whole stone instead of pooling in a table facet. Size is the real decision here. The chokers and the dainty ring keep citrine quiet and layer easily. The large pendants and the vertical ring make it the first thing anyone notices, and those two large necklaces let you pick the chain: cable at 16, 18 or 20 inches, or an 18 inch snake, paperclip or beaded chain. Every ring is made in sizes 5 through 10, in yellow gold fill, rose gold fill or sterling silver, except the triple fan ring, which is yellow gold fill only.
What does citrine mean?
Citrine is the abundance stone. Yellow quartz has been carried for prosperity and good cheer in folk tradition for centuries, and in the popular Feng Shui and crystal practices that grew from those traditions citrine is the merchant's stone, kept in a cash box or the wealth corner of a room and said to draw money and opportunity. Practitioners work with it for confidence, motivation and money worries, and place it with the solar plexus chakra, the seat of personal power. It is also one of the few stones said to need no cleansing, because it is believed to release what it absorbs. Leo, Aries and Gemini are its signs.
How do people work with citrine?
Citrine is charged briefly in morning light, a few minutes on a sill, and kept where money is handled. In popular Feng Shui the wealth corner is the far left of a room from the door, and citrine goes there or at the back left of a desk. It is the stone people hold while saying a goal out loud. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has citrine been used through history?
The Greeks and Romans set yellow quartz in rings and intaglios, and in the Art Deco years Hollywood put large citrines into bold cocktail jewelry. Much of the citrine sold today is heat-treated amethyst, and natural citrine in a true honey tone is scarcer; either way, a rough crystal keeps a warmth that faceting flattens.
Where does citrine come from?
Citrine is quartz tinted yellow to amber by trace iron. Brazil is the main source, with Bolivia, Madagascar, Zambia and the Ural Mountains contributing. Faceters want clean, even citrine; we want the opposite. The pieces here are picked from the crystals a cutter passes over, the banded, the frosted and the oddly pointed, plus vintage parcels from old collections, so nothing is mined to order for us.
Is raw citrine good for everyday wear?
Quartz is hard enough for daily wear. Keep it dry, clean with a soft cloth and store out of prolonged direct sun, which can mute the yellow over time.
