October Birthstone Jewelry

October gets two birthstones, opal and tourmaline, and we make jewelry in both. Most of these pieces use raw Australian opal, chosen stone by stone, so the flash of color is different in every one. Rings, studs, necklaces and bracelets, made by hand in our Atlanta studio.

What to expect from your October Birthstone Jewelry

Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.

What are the October birthstones?

Opal and tourmaline. Most of this collection is raw Australian opal; the rest is tourmaline in pink, black, blue and watermelon. Both are hand-picked rough stones.

Opal or tourmaline for an October gift?

Opal if you want soft, unpredictable color that moves; no two are alike. Tourmaline if you want something harder and more geometric, like a pink stud or a black baguette band.

A closer look at October Birthstone Jewelry

Opal is the older of October's two birthstones, and the one most of this collection is built around. Our raw Australian opal is left rough, so instead of a domed, polished cabochon you get an uneven natural face that throws green, orange and blue flashes as it moves. Tourmaline is October's second birthstone and comes in more colors than any other gem family. In this shop that means pink tourmaline in belted studs and baguette bands, deep black tourmaline in dainty rings and pendants, blue tourmaline, and the occasional watermelon piece with pink and green in one crystal. Choosing between them is mostly about temperament. Raw opal reads soft and unpredictable, and no two are alike. Tourmaline baguettes are raw crystals too, but tourmaline grows in straight-sided rods, so they read cleaner and more geometric. Stones are set in 24k gold over electroformed copper on chains that are 14k gold-filled (1/20) with a 24k dip.

What are the October birthstones?

October has had opal since the first modern list, tourmaline has been its second stone since 1912, and the 1952 list named pink tourmaline specifically. Opal is the stone of imagination and feeling, prized by the Romans above almost every other gem; tourmaline is the stone of many colors, pink for the heart and black for steadiness in crystal lore. Between them October has the widest range of any birthday month. Our natural opal and tourmaline rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside and from vintage lots; a few moon and star shapes use Kyocera lab-created opal and say so on the product page.
