What to expect from your Herkimer Diamond

Stones, metals, delivery windows, sizing and daily wear, gathered in one place.

Is a Herkimer diamond a real diamond?

No, and we never call it one without the Herkimer in front. It is a naturally faceted, double-terminated quartz crystal from Herkimer County, New York, prized because it is water clear and looks cut straight out of the ground.

How clear will my stone be?

Most are glass clear with a small veil or inclusion or two. Every crystal is hand-picked, so a five-stone ring reads as a row of siblings rather than clones, and yours will not match its photo exactly.

Is Herkimer quartz durable?

Yes. Quartz is hard enough for everyday rings and studs. Keep it dry, clean with a soft cloth and avoid hard knocks on the points.

A closer look at Herkimer Diamond

Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds at all. They are quartz crystals that grow with a point at both ends and facets already formed, which is why they look cut straight out of the pocket. Clarity is the draw: the better ones are glass clear with a veil or two inside, and they throw light the way rough stone usually does not. Because every crystal is chosen by hand, a five stone ring reads as a row of siblings rather than clones, and the stone you receive will not match its photo exactly. Clear and already faceted by nature, it is the stone people choose when they want brightness without a cut gem.

What does herkimer diamond mean?

Herkimer diamond has one of the strongest reputations in modern crystal practice despite being quartz. Because each crystal grows with a point at both ends, practitioners describe it as a stone that draws energy in and sends it out at once, the clearest channel in the quartz family, and work with it for clarity, dreamwork and meditation. Pairs of Herkimers are traditionally given to two people who live apart, one each, as a stone of attunement. It belongs to the crown and third eye chakras. Sagittarius and Aries are its signs.

How do people work with herkimer diamond?

Herkimer diamonds are charged in sun or moonlight, either works. Practitioners place one at each end of a crystal grid, split a pair between two people who live apart, and hold one at the third eye for dreamwork; some sleep with a Herkimer under the pillow and keep a notebook beside the bed. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.

How has herkimer diamond been used through history?

The crystals were first described in the late 1700s when settlers cutting through dolomite in the Mohawk Valley found pockets of them, and workers called them diamonds for their brilliance. Indigenous peoples of the Mohawk Valley are believed to have collected them long before that. The name stuck even though gemologists have always known them to be quartz, and the fields around Herkimer and Middleville have drawn collectors ever since.

Where does herkimer diamond come from?

Herkimer diamonds are quartz crystals that formed slowly inside cavities in half-billion-year-old dolostone, growing unattached so both ends terminate in natural facets. True Herkimers come only from Herkimer County, New York; similar double-terminated quartz from Pakistan, China and elsewhere is sold under other names. Herkimers are never faceted, so our sorting is simpler: we buy the small and lightly veiled crystals that collectors pass over for museum-grade clarity, plus vintage pocket finds, and set them as they grew.

Is raw herkimer diamond good for everyday wear?

Quartz is hard and suits daily wear. Keep it dry, wipe with a soft cloth, and mind the points, which can chip on a hard knock.
