Why does raw ruby look matte instead of sparkly?
Because it has never been cut or polished. Rough ruby is an opaque, velvety pink-red crystal; the glassy crimson most people picture is a faceted stone. Ours keep the natural face, so the color reads deep rather than bright.
Is raw ruby hard enough for a ring I never take off?
Yes. Ruby is corundum, second only to diamond in hardness. Keep it dry and clean with a soft cloth and it will hold up to daily wear.
One ring says created ruby. What does that mean?
That ring is set with a lab-grown ruby, chemically the same as natural corundum but made rather than mined, and it says so in its title. Every other ruby piece here uses rough ruby crystal.
A closer look at Ruby
Ruby is corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, turned red by chromium, and left unpolished it reads matte raspberry rather than glassy crimson. Because the crystals are chosen one at a time, the depth of red shifts from piece to piece. Stones are set in 24k gold over electroformed copper, or in sterling silver on the silver styles, worked by hand by the women in our Atlanta studio. Ring sizes run 5 to 12 depending on the style, and most bands can be ordered in 14k gold-filled (1/20) with a 24k dip, rose gold-filled or sterling silver. The Five Stone, Triple and Dainty Created Ruby rings are the exceptions, offered in yellow gold only. Ruby is the July birthstone, which makes the dainty ring and the studs straightforward summer birthday gifts.
What does ruby mean?
Ruby is the stone of passion, courage and life force in most traditions that valued it. Sanskrit texts call it ratnaraj, the king of gems; Burmese warriors are said to have worn rubies for invincibility in battle; medieval Europeans held that a ruby would darken to warn of danger. Modern practitioners work with ruby for energy, motivation, confidence and romantic passion, the stone for anyone who feels their fire has gone out, and place it with the root and heart chakras together. Leo, Cancer and Aries are its signs.
How do people work with ruby?
Ruby is a fire stone and is charged in sun. Practitioners wear it over the heart or on the ring finger and hold it in meditation when they need courage; some traditions keep a ruby in the bedroom. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has ruby been used through history?
Rubies have been traded along the Silk Road since at least 200 BC, and medieval Europeans believed one would darken to warn its wearer of danger. Warriors in Burma wore rubies for invincibility, and Mughal and European crowns alike are set with stones that turned out, under modern testing, to be spinel, which says something about how badly everyone wanted ruby.
Where does ruby come from?
Ruby is corundum colored red by chromium. Myanmar's Mogok valley has been the classic source for centuries; Mozambique now produces much of the world's supply, with Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Tanzania contributing. Our ruby rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
Is raw ruby good for everyday wear?
Corundum is extremely hard and well suited to daily wear. Keep it dry, clean with a soft cloth and store it away from softer stones.
