Different minerals. Garnet is a silicate family with a wine-red tone; ruby is corundum, harder and more pink-red. Both are set rough here, and garnet is the more affordable of the two.

The name comes from the Latin granatum, pomegranate, for the resemblance to the fruit's seeds. In the 1800s Bohemian garnets from what is now the Czech Republic filled European jewelry boxes, and travelers carried the stone as a charm against misfortune on the road.

Garnet is a family of related minerals rather than one stone; the deep red kinds we set are usually pyrope and almandine. Sources include India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania and Mozambique, with smaller finds across the United States. Our garnet rough is sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside, crystals too small, too included or too irregular to facet, and from vintage lots bought out of old collections. The stone was already out of the ground before we found it; we give it a setting instead of a drawer.
