Is your turquoise natural?
It is rough turquoise with its matrix intact, not reconstituted chips or dyed howlite. Most turquoise on the market is stabilized to keep it from absorbing oils; ask us about a specific piece and we will tell you what the supplier told us.
Why do some turquoise stones look greener than others?
Iron. More iron in the stone shifts the blue toward green; more copper keeps it sky blue. Every stone is hand-picked, so the piece you receive carries its own balance.
How do I keep turquoise from changing color?
Keep it dry and away from oils, lotion and perfume, and take it off before swimming or washing up. Turquoise is porous, and that is most of what it takes to keep the color close to where it started.
A closer look at Turquoise
Turquoise is an opaque copper mineral, soft enough that people have carved and set it for thousands of years and porous enough that it does not want oils, lotion or perfume. The dark veining running through it is host rock, called matrix. Greener stones simply carry more iron. What you are really choosing in this group is scale and metal: the dainty ring in sterling silver reads quiet and southwestern, the same stone in yellow gold reads warmer, and the large ring puts a full rough nugget across the knuckle. Turquoise is a December birthstone, and the tiny studs are the smallest version of it here. Take the piece off before swimming or washing up and the color will change far less over the years.
What does turquoise mean?
Turquoise may be the oldest protective stone on earth, and the Southwestern Native nations each hold their own lore for it. Apache tradition says turquoise is found at the end of a rainbow after rain, and Apache warriors attached it to bows for true aim; the Zuni call it the sky stone, blue for sky and green for earth; for the Diné it belongs to Changing Woman and to ceremony. Persians wore it against unnatural death and Egyptians set it into the masks of pharaohs. Modern practitioners describe turquoise as a throat-chakra stone for protection, honest speech, calm and safe travel. Sagittarius, Scorpio and Pisces are its signs.
How do people work with turquoise?
Turquoise is never cleansed with water, salt or chemicals, which stain it; a soft dry cloth and a night near a window are all it wants. It is worn as a traveler's stone and, in older custom, given rather than bought for the strongest protection. For a set piece, we suggest moonlight, sound or a soft dry cloth for cleansing and charging. Water, salt and soil are hard on the setting and the plating, and the stone does not need them.
How has turquoise been used through history?
Egyptian pharaohs wore turquoise mined in the Sinai before 3000 BC; Tutankhamun's mask is inlaid with it. Persian turquoise set the standard for sky blue and gave the stone its name by way of France, where it arrived through Turkey. In the American Southwest the Ancestral Puebloans traded it across the continent, and Navajo, Zuni and Hopi silversmiths made it the signature of a whole region's jewelry.
Where does turquoise come from?
Turquoise is a copper and aluminum phosphate that forms where water seeps through copper-bearing rock in dry country. Iran, the American Southwest, China and Mexico are the main sources.
