What are the December birthstones?
Turquoise, tanzanite, blue topaz and blue zircon. We work with the first three, all raw and hand-picked: turquoise for earthy color, tanzanite for violet-blue depth, topaz for a light clear blue.
Which December stone is best for daily wear?
Topaz. Tanzanite is softer and can cleave on a knock, and turquoise is porous and wants to stay dry, so both are better as studs or as rings you take off for work. A small raw topaz ring is the easiest to live with.
A closer look at December Birthstone Jewelry
Turquoise is the December stone most people picture: opaque, sky to robin's egg blue, often threaded with brown or black matrix from the rock it grew in. In raw form it reads soft and earthy rather than glassy, and those matrix lines are character, not a flaw. Tanzanite is the opposite mood. Rough tanzanite is translucent and shifts between violet and blue depending on the light, so it looks deeper and dressier next to turquoise. Sky blue topaz sits in between, clear and pale, with crisp natural angles where the crystal broke.
How to choose December birthstone jewelry
A cut stone is ground to a uniform shape. We leave ours rough, set in 24k gold over electroformed copper, so the surface keeps its own geometry and the color varies piece to piece. If you want color you notice across a room, choose turquoise. For something quieter with depth, choose tanzanite. For a light everyday stone, choose blue topaz. Chains are 14k gold-filled (1/20) with a 24k dip.

December has more birthstones than any other month: turquoise from the old lists, blue zircon added in 1952, tanzanite in 2002, and blue topaz by common custom. All of them are blue. Turquoise is the ancient one, worn for protection and safe travel for five thousand years; tanzanite was only found below Kilimanjaro in 1967. Our natural stones are sorted from what the cutting trade sets aside and from vintage lots, so the rough in your piece was already out of the ground before we found it.
